The law of existence that is perhaps the easiest to understand is that a very clear, concrete wall divides the worlds of the living and the dead. Though the wall is not tangible, it is a concept that is understood and obeyed by all of nature. The wall must never be crossed.
This was the information given to me by every conceivable source from the moment of my birth until my nineteenth year, when the strangest of events marked both the end and the beginning of my otherwise unremarkable life.
I crossed the wall.
It is as though I stand within the very stone and mortar of that wall right now, along with the tiny number of others who share my fate. Each day is equally wondrous and disconcerting to me. I marvel that I may walk the streets and yet take no breath. My cheek is cold, and his is cold as well, and yet we do not lie still in the ground as we undoubtedly should.
How, why did we become those who are...in between?
I will have the answer.
